UNESCO supported Workshop on Strengthening a Gender Sensitive Media Environment in Maldives takes off at DME

October 25, 2021: A week-long Training of Trainers (ToT) program on ‘Strengthening a Gender Sensitive Media Environment in Maldives’ took off on Sunday. This online workshop is being conducted by Delhi Metropolitan Education (DME), Noida in collaboration with Addu Women’s Association (AWA), Maldives under the aegis of IPDC- UNESCO for the journalists of Maldives.

As chief Guest of the inaugural function, Prof. Veena Sikri, Professor and Ambassador, Founding Trustee and Convener, South Asia Women’s Network (SWAN), & Vice Chairperson, South Asia Foundation (SAF India) highlighted the importance of gender equality in media sector and said “Policy Interventions are required to change the situation of women in Media sector in South Asian countries”.

This Training of Trainers’ (ToT) program has been conceived and developed by Media and Communication Experts of India for journalist trainers of Maldives.The participants are the trainers that have years of experience of working in the media industry with capability of conducting training of fellow journalists.

Also present on the occasion were Dr Mariyam Shakeela, Founder of Addu Women’s Association (AWA) who has worked in diverse fields including business, teaching, prior to joining politics as a cabinet minister in the government of Maldives. As a politician she has worked in the Ministries of Environment and Energy, Gender, Human Rights, and Health.

The lead faculty of the workshop are Prof. Jethwaney, Senior ICSSR Research Fellow and Former Professor Indian Institute of Mass Communication and Prof. Ambrish Saxena, Dean DME Media School and Director International Relations, Delhi Metropolitan Education.

The resource persons for the ToT workshop comes from diverse expertise – Prof. Maithi Ganjoo, Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Media Studies and Humanities at Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, Faridabad, Dr Gauri Chakraborty, Professor at Times School of Media, Bennett University, Prof. Susmita Bala, Head, DME Media School, Dr Krishna Pandey, Assistant Professor, Media School, Delhi Metropolitan Education, Ms Mitali Mohanty, Assistant Professor, Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, Faridabad and Dr Manasvi Maheshwari, Associate Professor, DME Media School.
